Question:

We just had about the best Thanksgiving I can remember in my whole life. My brother has decided that, now that our parents are dead, he is the head of the family, and he invited all of us for Thanksgiving.  He also included my best friend Johnny and his wife Liana and our goddaughter Alexandra, even inviting them to stay at his house.  There were 15 of us for dinner, and everething was perfect. My brother has a big old house that’s been restored, and they have lots of nice furniture, dishes, etc., and the turkey was a perfect golden brown — just like that Norman Rockwell painting.  After dinner we played a board game with the kids and had a blast — it was so much more fun than watching football . . . For some reason I had a lot of pain, but I just didn’t care — it just didn’t matter when I was having so much fun playing with the kids.   I thought about everyone in the group and hoped that however people were spending the day, that it was good for them.  Really, I did. mary

Well, Will, part of the reason it was so great was that my sister stayed in California and we stayed in Missouri . . . mary

LOL!!!  I think I have relatives like that too.  Are we related or are there lots of people who stay away from certain relatives at holidays?  :) Sue

Mary,      You paint a great picture of a wonderful day. I like the part about your brother declaring himself head of the family. I always have been in favor of the extended family , but sadly we have replaced it with the imploding family. May this year be the beginning of a great chapter in the life of your family. Peace, Richard

Mary, I am very happy that you had a great Thanksgiving!  Isn’t it wonderful to have family and friends around us. Our Thanksgiving Prayer included all those that do not have what we sometimes take for granted. Our families, friends, and each other here on this group. Susan and I cooked dinner for 10 people too. Seven weeks post-op and thanks to a wonderful surgeon I was able to still do the cooking and baking. We all have much to be thankful for this year!  You said your pain level was so high, I bet it was for a lot of us, but like you…it is WORTH IT! Happy Thanksgiving, two days after! BTW, Mary, did you get some left overs to take home?  Sure hope so!   Peace, Jo

Scoop, Sorry to hear about the imploding family . . . unfortunately it’s that way with my sister, but that’s for another post at another time.   My brother’s name is Richard too!  All the good guys have that name, right? He’s continued our family tradition of inviting internationals to share our holidays with us by having Johnny and Liana, who are from Romania.  When I was growing up, we had Filipino, Chinese and Persian friends who shared Thanksgiving with us.  The Filipino family became our family’s best friends, and they were there this year as usual.  No holiday would be complete without them.   I am so proud of my baby brother.  He is only 44 and the youngest of the three of us, but he is easily the head of the family.  He is the executor of my mother’s estate and has done some great things, like fixing it so one of the daughters of the Filipino family could buy my mother’s house and thus keep it in the "family."  Every decision he’s made is fair and just and there are no hard feelings, which is amazing.  And yes, I’ve told him many times how proud I am of him and how much I love and appreciate him. Thanks for giving me a chance to boast! mary

Jo, Glad to hear that you had a nice dinner too.  I know you like to cook and bake, and I’m glad you were able to. We didn’t get any leftovers — there weren’t many in the first place, and we didn’t go straight home (shopping detour at an outlet mall near Kansas City — I got 6 pr. of new socks!!!!!), so we were afraid stuff would spoil.  My brother and Randy (almost a family member) are prodigious eaters and the turkey was just a hulk when they were done! Yes, it most certainly was worth it, mostly to see the children — this is one of the few non-commercial holidays left, and to think that we could get the video generation interested in a board game that’s a generation old is pretty incredible.   This is a memory I’m going to cherish for the rest of my life. mary
