Question:

I’ve used up a little more than half of my total lifetime allowance of California state temporary disability, still gently flaring (not nearly as badly as last summer and fall, when I couldn’t get off my bed by myself or pull up the covers). My doctor’s starting me on Remicade as soon as my TB test comes back negative. BUT: I had already made an appointment for federal disability just in case I *don’t* get better before my state disability runs out, so I use the waiting period and get through the first 309,073 denials and appeals by next fall. I’ve never done this before. Does it make sense to start the process now? I can work off and on, but not whole days, and erratically. It’s hard for me to judge when I will and won’t be able to work. One semi-busy day means I can’t do much at all the next day. And Remicade just might work. I might zoom around like a trooper on that. But I’ve had some medicine-related disappointments, and I’m afraid that if I don’t start the SSD/SSI process now, I’ll have a long, disabled, but without income period after the state temporary disability runs out. My absolute hope and prayer is that I *don’t* need disability. My distant fear is that I will. I just want to be ready. And I’m bouncing this off of you to find out whether I’m being sensible. – Mary MacT http://www.prado.com/~iris (new site under construction: http://www.alamedacreek.net/mary)

Mary, I would go ahead and start the process, because you have to be out of work for a year before you can apply.  Then it took me a year to get approved. In our state you can have a try out of going back to work.  There is a nine month period where you work and get your disability to see if you can make it.  If you can’t make it then you are still signed up. Yep.  Makes tons of sense to me. Char "Remember, I’m pulling for ya’.  We’re all in this together."  Red Green

Unless things have changed drastically since I was approved 5 years ago, this isn’t the case.  I stopped working on 8/31 and filed on 9/3.  I was approved 30 days later, although there was a 3 month wait before my benefits started. Anne AAC/AAF/AFBV62.0844.AZ http://www.tckworld.com/opfoot

In my case, it’s moot. I’ve been off work for 13 1/2 months, and on state disability (which only lasts a year) since last August. – Mary MacT http://www.prado.com/~iris (new site under construction: http://www.alamedacreek.net/mary)

Same here. I applied for disability through work and then through SS at the same time. Approved of both in a short time. I had to wait 3 months for a check from SS but it was retroactive to the day I was approved, or applied, I’m not sure which. There is no rule of having to wait a year that I’m aware of.

I don’t believe *every* word you say, but you’ve been through the wringer and survived. That’s worth something. :) – Mary MacT http://www.prado.com/~iris (new site under construction: http://www.alamedacreek.net/mary)
