I have one and I think they are pretty good.  You can, of course, remove the chain saw from the pole and use it for trimming thicker branches of bushes, etc.  I have used the gas unit and I find that the chain end is almost too light because the engine is at the bottom.  On the other hand, with the HD electric one (which I have), it is slightly too top-end heavy, however, I does help push into the branch. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Oh good God. Check out Harbor Freight — they have a cheaper one — but it might be junk for all I know. I’ve had good luck with some of their stuff which doesn’t need frequent use. For me, a pole saw would fall into this category. -Tim

The chainsaws aren’t bad for minor trimming, but 10′ up on a pole you won’t be able to contorl it well enough.  I’d sell you mine for half that, it just takes up space in the shed anyway… Jeff

Another user with a gas-powered Stihl.  The motor is at the user end making it much easier to balance.  Even with that, you will find it tiring to use for long periods of time.  It comes with a simple harness which clips just in front of the motor, but that is not the balance point when the pole is extended. Overall, it’s a good tool, but not one which you would want to use for long periods of time.   — Larry

Polock chain saws… what’ll they think of next!

Response:

My suggestion is to buy a manual pole pruner/saw.  I did a lot of damage with mine and didn’t have to mess with a chain saw.

I once taped a reciprocating saw to a 10 ft piece of 1 inch diameter thinwall conduit and taped the switch down fully……using an extension cord as the on off switch and a long sawzall blade I managed to do some trimming quit easily with it. Probably a bit slower than the chainsaw but I was using matrials and equipment at hand and it did work ok… gonna do it again later this year. I noticed this year that the guys who do the tree trimming for the power company use a similer device to mine but it is air powered….wonder if those bastards stole my idea ??? Too bad I didnt

Corny, you gotta watch "The Red Green Show"–you will love it!  It’s produced in Canada and shown on PBS.  A duct taper’s delight! –John W. Wells The Men’s Prayer:    "I’m a man,    But I can change–    If I have to—–    I guess."

Dunno about those electrics, but I have a Stihl gas powered pole saw (extends to about 12′ also).  It cuts very well. For safety sake, one needs to resist the urge to stand on one’s tippy toes in order to lop off just that one last high branch–and thus end up standing directly below the branch one is sawing–bonk! My saw gets pretty heavy in use, especially extended to full length. I would guess the saw you are talking about has the motor at the business end.  The gas powered ones have it at the other end, aiding a bit in balance.  I’d suggest you heft the saw you’re interested in and swing it about a little to check out its weight and balance. Then there’s the obvious danger of cutting the cord, and the necessity of having a power source within extension cord distance of your trees. –JWW
