Question:
I am interested in getting a large tattoo on my back that would be dedicated to my grandfather who passed away about a year ago. I have had two tattoos so far that I would call normal size on each of my shoulders and they both ran about $100. My question is how much do these very detailed back tattoos cost and how on Earth do people afford them? Do they usually make some kind of deal with the artist like purchasing all supplies for the artist in order for that person to be able to express their artistic talent to the fullest? Any info on how these large detailed tattoos are handled would be greatly appreciated.

Explain to the artist you pick what you want, he/she will likely sketch out the product and go to work. Be prepared to pay about 100 per hour or more for a decent artist. Of course your definition of a large piece could be wildly different from mine. A "large" intricate piece will likely take many settings. Pay as you go. 3 hrs one day =$300 etc. save your money! I have less than 120 square inches and have well over a grand, and I got mine cheap because of the relationship I have with various of my clients. Of course that grand doesn’t include the cost of the little gifts/memorabilia i find that i give them. I.E. an antique color book plate of native island tattooed people for the artist who did the hammer and rake work on my arm. good luck and save your pennies Ray

Normal size? Any tattoo of any size should be "normal size". A customer works with the artist to decide what size is best for the design and placement, and thus it becomes "normal size". >My question is how much do these very detailed back tattoos cost and >how on Earth do people afford them?
It depends on the piece, the person, and how well-connected he or she is. Some people have tattoo artists for friends and get free work. Some people spend a lot of money and are okay with that because they see it as an investment in themselves. Some people have a deal with their artist because the work will be extensive and must be done in stages. Some people probably exchange sex for tattoos. >Any info on how these large detailed tattoos are handled would be >greatly appreciated.
You find an artist whose work you really want on your skin For The Rest Of Your Life, and you ask him or her how the payment is to be arranged. You decide if it’s worth it, and go from there. You don’t know how much they cost, but you obviously think it might be "too much" (for the common man, for most people, for what it is . . . ) Odd. And while we are enlightening you, remember you are allowed to tip, especially since you are obviously going to pick the best artist to do the original art you will use to represent the memory or your grandfather. I was not out to get sarcastic answers to my questions. I was sincerely interested in how people pay for these full back tattoos, and if in some cases they make deals with their artist. I thank the people that gave me the type of answers I was after. It seems that the majority of people pay for a few hours of work at a time, and it may take several months to finish the tattoo…..thats cool. I was also wondering if people have made other types of deals with their artists, and I would be intersted to hear about them. Thanks!

I think most have answered that question in a manner — and politely. Most artists do not barter. MONEY pays the bills, not cookies. And if you think you might trade ink and needles for your new skin art — I’d think again. But I’m sure you can always find someone who’ll trade a tattoo for a little sex in the back room. Kavin

Oh sweet Jesus in a chocolate factory! When you post to usenet, you’re going to get a vast array of different kinds of answers. Expect it. I answered your question with exactly what you claim you were looking for, even with my sarcasm. If you get pissy about that, how the fuck are you going to deal with the comments you’re going to get about the hack job you’ll finally have on your back when you scrape up what you consider enough cash? Unless you "make friends" with an artist, you’re going to have to pay him or her the hourly rate they expect for big work like that, usually in the range of $125 – $200 an hour. A backpiece may cost you from $2000 to $4000 on the average. Unless you’re working with a really slow artist. Sure, you can strike a deal with a tattooist sometimes. I’ve traded tattoo work for all sorts of things, stereos, leather jackets, guns, gold, even computer hardware. I doubt you’re going to get a whole backpiece on barter, but some horse trading isn’t out of the question. If you show up and tell the artists that you’re willing to get whatever he feels like putting on if he’ll make it more affordable, that can help. If you have a set idea about what you want and it’s something he (or she) isn’t "in to" (therefore making it more work than fun) then he (or she) may charge you a lot more. I’ve done three or four free backpieces. You could always just "get lucky" and find some nice guy tattoo artist, hehehe. regards, Cat — oO$8$Oo.,oo,.oO$$88$Oo 8$:` .8$$8. ’;8$’ 8$. ,8$ $8, :8$ `8$$..8$o..o$8..;8$ http://www.catbones.com/ http://www.acid.org/
