If you add another cylinder to a 2.2L five, I think that comes out to about 2.6. Would that engine be based on the 2-liter five? Anyway, I believe that VW built this engine to power Type LT trucks originally, and adapted it to sell to Volvo. Trying to distinguish between "VW" engines and "Audi" engines is a hazardous occupation. When VW took over Audi, they quickly adopted Audi-designed engines, or direct derivatives of them, in all their liquid-cooled cars. In later years, Audi has diverged a bit from the VW lineup (e.g. the 90-degree 2.8 V-6), but I believe VAG’s management plans to rein them in a bit in the future. <snip> — -Stephen H. They used a Renault/Peugeot engine in their 1982-1991 760’s I think they were the years. It is an overhead cam V-6 with 12 valves, which is a ‘wet’ type motor as the coolant circulates around the steel cylinder liners as the block is aluminium. Good points-reliable Bosch Injection system, quite powerful plenty of low end torque, for its age quite reasonable fuel consumption, you can get 29 or possibly even 30 at 55 mph despite weight of cars. Bad points: poor oil delivery to cams (which wear rapidly and clack early) does not like overheating (warpage etc) actually has manually adjusted tappets???!!!! I have 160,000 miles on mine, but they often don’t make that. They also made a six cylinder diesel, about which I know nothing. MDC PS-the V-6 went into the DeLorean!!!!!!!

The diesel engines supplied to Volvo were from Audi — the 2.4 L were basically their 2.2 L diesel 5 with a 6th cylinder added, increasing their displacement to 2.4 L. BTW, Audi’s IL-5s were either 2.2 L or 2.3 L, not 2.4.

Audi makes IL 5 s with 2.4 Liter displacement. I’don’t know of any Audi 6s. Thanks for the other info.

: When did Volvo make the I6 and V6 engines? What models were they put in? : Thanks : Karl Volvo’s first 6 cylinder in the US was the 164, around 1969. It used a 3.0 liter ohv IL-6. The next ones were the 262C, 264 GL, and 265 GL, which then became the Bertone Coupe and GLE. They used a 2.7 L sohc V6, a joint project of Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo (and sometimes referred to as the PRV engine). The next models to use a 6 were the 760 GLE and 780, which used a 2.8 L sohc V6, basically a larger version of the PRV engine. Finally, Volvo now uses a 2.9 dohc IL-6 in the 960. Volvo also used diesel 2.4 L sohc IL-6s in both regular and turbocharged form. These engines came from Audi and were in, if I remember correctly, models called Diesel, GL Diesel, GLE diesel, and 760 TD.

The V6 was a joint project with French Peugot and Renault. It was originally inteded to become a V8 but the oil crisis in the 70’s put an end to that and two cylinders were cut. The V6 was introduced in the 264/265 for the model of ‘75. At that time it had a capacity of 2.7l. It was later upgraded several times and was also used in the 760. The I6 was introduced in ‘91 when the 960 appeared as a replacement for the 760. It was a completely new construction with 24 valves and such. At that time only a 2.9l version (marketed as 3.0) was available. Last year a 2.5l version was introduced as well as a manual gear box (which is only available with the 2.5). I have heard that there is a special US version of the 2.9 with more torque at lower revs than the European version but I’m not sure about that. I hope that this helped. PS The I5 engine of the 850 is the I6 with one cylinder less, just as the I4 of the S4 is the same but with two cylinders less. Christian Magnusson
