Question:
I’ve recently obtained the guitar I’ve lusted after for lo these long five years… the amazing Epi LP ES, the Epiphone takeoff of the Les Paul Florentine. It has been sorely abused, and among the defects are worn, loose tuning pegs. It has the gold Kluson-style pegs with a ‘E’ embossed on the back. I’m looking at all the different gold tuning peg sets available on Ebay, and I’m wondering if there’s a whit of difference between them. You can get a full set, with bushings and screws, for $26: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7416905366 or you can pay up to $60 for ones that say ‘Kluson Deluxe’ on the back: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7417313684 for the same money, tempting to go with the Sperzels, have to enlarge the peg holes, but how cool with black and gold: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7417314646 Any of you guitaristas out there have experience with these machines? Any reason to pony up for the big-bux Klusons besides the name on the back? Are all of these made in the same factory out of the same stuff? Your knowlege (or opinions!) are most appreciated, in advance. __ Steve .

Buy a good set of pegs. You won’t be happy until you do. The rest doesn’t matter. If it ain’t in tune, then what?… Chuck (don’t worry about the names… www.monkeychild.com

I take it you’re recommending the Sperzels? __ Steve .

I’ve been very happy with Sperzels. — "Guitarmen, wake up and pluck wire for sound, let ‘em hear you play" – CHARLIE CHRISTIAN 1939

Tuners are no place to scrimp…….buy the best you can afford, I’ve had great luck with Sperzels, and Klusons. There IS a huge difference in quality between the better known names, and the low priced "no names"…….

I have had very good luck with Gotoh tuners, and they make Kluson look-alikes if that is important to you. http://www.allparts.com has them. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I’ve recently obtained the guitar I’ve lusted after > for lo these long five years… the amazing Epi > LP ES, the Epiphone takeoff of the Les Paul > Florentine. > It has been sorely abused, and among the > defects are worn, loose tuning pegs. Skip the Epi tuners…be sure and tape the front of the headstock and be careful or you will knock out chunks from the front of the headstock. I replaced my LP pegs with medium priced Grovers from Steward Mac some time back with no complaints. I peruse ebait for prices too .. but when I see *like Original Klusons Gibson" … IMO it simply rebranded cheap crap pawned off to volume ebait sellers. who sell it for $30 with a $12 shipping charge. Define "like* ? No doubt you know if the tuners are trash. I was once told by a Luther that tuning problems with tuner pegs are seldom the root cause .. With a 14:1 or so ratio .. it would take a elephant to loosen a string. The root cause is the binding the string correctly to the post by looping the string UNDER itself like some sailor’s knot while the slack is removed. Cheers & good luck.

I always do lock the treble strings… thanks for the tip, though. And thanks for all the other tips and opinions… I’ll let y’all know what I end up with. I’ve got the lockers on my ‘78 Strat, been very happy with them (Fender branded Sperzel clones, I guess… best thing is, the lock knob on the back can’t come all the way unscrewed, you’ll really be pissed if you’re changing a string at a gig and the knob falls off, losing the spring etc… don’t ask how I know this.) __ Steve .

Not neccessarily the Sperzels -but they’re good. There are some other brands that will work as well. I’d reecommend going to the Stewart MacDonlad site and doing some window shopping. Chuck

Stew-Mac was the first place I went… not a lot of selection, believe it or not. AllParts had better selection… prices just a little up there. I took the tuners that were loose off, and used pliers to re-tense the cover tabs and otherwise bent them back into shape… seems good enough for now. In order to use Sperzels I’d have to ream the peg holes out… not quite ready to go that far yet. __ Steve .
